Falcons Named to All Region Team
At Scranton, Pennsylvania, the Lackawanna College Athletic Department is honored to announce that three players from its women's soccer program have been named to the All Region XIX Division I Women's Soccer Team. Receiving first team honors were freshman, Erika Symons and Kaylin Umstead. Sophomore, Ashley Smith was selected to the Region's second team.
Symons was recognized as one of the Region's premier forwards based on a season where she scored 19 goals and 42 points. Both her goals scored and total points led the Region in those statistical categories. Impressively, Symons scored half of the Falcon's total goals this season Coach Berg in learning of Symons first team selection commented "She deserves this recognition. Erika is the quickest forward ever to play for Lackawanna College. She has great instincts and is an explosive goal scorer. She is single-minded player who continues to attack and score goals despite being double and tripled teamed." Symons is a graduate of Mid Valley High School.
Umstead received her recognition for her play as a midfielder. During the 2011 season she scored 9 goals and contributed 5 assists for a total of 23 points. Her goals made and points made her the second most prolific scorer on the Lackawanna squad. In learning of her selection, Coach Berg said" Kaylin was the most well rounded player on our roster. She was an effective scorer when we need her to be, yet she could still play a determined defense. Kaylin was the best communicator I have coached in my six years at Lackawanna. Having her on the field was like having an additional coach in our program. She is hard working and played through injuries that what have had other girls on the sideline." Umstead is a graduate of Upper Perkiomen High School.
Smith made the second team as a defensive player, an award that Coach Berg whole heartily agreed with. Berg said, "Last year Ashley joined our team as a softball player who wanted to play soccer in the off season. She worked extremely hard at playing defense and did a credible job. This year she took her play to another level. I assigned her to opposing team's best scorer who she effectively challenged for a full 90 minutes. Her selection to the All Region Second Team was well deserved". Smith is a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School.
