Jessup, PA – On a Sunday afternoon better suited for a late season football game than a softball doubleheader, Lackawanna split its non-conference twin bill with Rowan College of Gloucester County. The Falcons took the first game 4-2 before falling in the night-cap 10-2.
In Game one, Lackawanna took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Colleen Cwalina. The homer was Cwalina's third of the year. RCGC quickly rebounded with two runs of their own in the top of second, to tie the score at two all. That tie was short lived, as Lackawanna scored an unearned run in the third when Lauryn Rodriquez reached third on a three-base error by the Roadrunner's right fielder and then scored on a ground out off the bat of Gabrielle Vuocolo. The only other Lackawanna run came in the sixth inning, when Marlena Pegula doubled and scored on a Amanda Mowry single.
Pegula was credited with win after relinquishing two runs on seven hits in five innings. She was relieved by Mowry, who earned a save by holding Gloucester scoreless over two innings on two hits, while striking out one.
In Game two, RCGC scored three in the first inning, added four more in the fifth and finished their scoring with three in the sixth. Although, Lackawanna hitters made solid contact it seemed that everything was struck right at Roadrunner defender. The Falcons put their two runs on the scoreboard in the sixth when Amaya Townsend slammed a two-run homer to left field; her first of the season.
Lackawanna opens it Region XIX DII conference play on Tuesday, when they travel to Randolph, New Jersey to play County College of Morris in a doubleheader. Tuesday's twin bill is scheduled for 2:00 PM start.
