Lackawanna Football EL Toro Bowl Champions

Yuma AZ – Lackawanna Football and an Arizona Bowl Game are perfect ingredients for an exciting football contest. In 2006, the Falcons won the Valley of the Sun Bowl 17-16 on a 50-yard field goal with no time on the clock. Two years ago, while participating in their second Valley of the Sun Bowl game, they lost to Mesa Community College 48-42 in double overtime. Today, with a 7-point lead in the closing minutes, the Falcon defense stopped a potential game tying Arizona Western drive to clinch a 17-10 El Toro Bowl.

It was the Lackawanna defense that proved key to the Falcons' victory.

In the first half, they held the Matador's offense out the end zone., while the Lackawanna scored twice. The first of the Falcons' scores came in the first quarter, when Shane McLaughlin hit Nasir Hooker on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 3:13 left in the period. The second score came at the 11:18 point in the second quarter when McLaughlin hit Javon Turner on a 67-yard scoring toss. Isaiah Howard was successful on each of his PATs attempts to give Lackawanna a 14-0 lead.

Western's only score of the first half came on a 30-yard field goal after a McLaughlin interception gave the Matadors the ball in Lackawanna territory. The Falcons responded to that score as the Lackawanna D forced a turner over on downs in the closing minutes of the half. This change in possession gave Howard the opportunity to kick a 32-yard field goal with no time on the clock; giving the Falcons a 17-3 lead at half time.

In the second half, the only score took place with 7:47 on the clock in the third period, as Arizona scored on an 18-yard rush and a successful PAT. From that point in the game forward the defense shutout out the Matadors to clinch a 17-10 win and a 2018 11-0 undefeated record.

Postgame, the Lackawanna Offensive Player of the Game award was given to Javon Turner for his 67-yard touchdown reception, while the Defensive award went to Jaquan Brisker for his 7 tackles and 1 sack.
