Scranton, PA - The Cincinnati Reds selected Lackawanna College's Jared Solomon in the eleventh round of the 2017 Major League Player Draft. He was the 317th overall pick and was the tenth player in the program history to be selected in this annual event.

Entering the draft, Solomon was ranked 393 of the Baseball America's top 500 prospects, which included High School, Junior College and four-year college players. In the lead up to start of the player selection process, he had some impressive workouts where his fastball topped off at 96 MPH

In learning that he had been drafted, Jared said. "It's an unreal feeling, it's the fulfillment of a dream." He added, "I am very excited to start the next chapter in my baseball career. I am very thankful and appreciative to everyone who had helped me along the way."

His Head Coach at Lackawanna, Bruce Thompson, had this to say "Jared is a great young man and I couldn't be happier for him. He worked extremely hard this past year and turned himself into a pro prospect. He has a bright future ahead of him."

An intelligent student/athlete, who has been nominated for academic awards with the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference and nationally with the National Junior College Athletic Association, Solomon now must decide between signing with the Reds or continuing his collegiate career at Xavier University, a NCAA Division I institution and member of the Big East conference.

This past season, the 6'2" sophomore led the team in both wins with 6 and strikeouts with 67. Overall he logged a 6-3 win/loss record and recorded a 3.42 ERA after giving up 21 earned runs on 43 hits in 55 1/3 innings.

He will join the following players who have at one time or another took the field for Lackawanna and were drafted in the MLB draft. Players previously drafted were Rich Condeelis, a 36th round choice of the Minnesorta Twins (2015); Chris Kirsch, the 14th round pick (2012) of the Tampa Bay Rays; Chris Sedon, a 2009 ninth round selection of the Detroit Tigers, Dan Winnie, the sixteenth round pick of the Atlanta Braves in 2010; Danny Nelson a 1996 42nd round choice of the New York Mets; Ron Chiavacci, a 1996 50th round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies; Harold Zdziarski, the 1994 63rd round selection of the New York Mets; Gary Grudzinski, a 1982 11th round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates; and, Tony Hernandez, a 15th round pick of the New York Yankees (2016)

Solomon is a resident of Millville, Pennsylvania and graduated from Millville Senior High School.
