Atlanta Braves Select Lackawanna College Pitcher, Dan Winnie, in 16th Round of Major League Draft

The National League's Atlanta Braves drafted Lackawanna College pitcher, Dan Winnie, in the 16th round of today's Major League Baseball Draft. Winnie becomes the second player to be picked in the MLB Draft who has played for Lackawanna College's baseball coach, Chris Pensak. Last year, Chris Sedon, a former Falcon infielder, was picked in the 9th round by the Detroit Tigers. However, Sedon was chosen after spending a year at the University of Pittsburgh. Winnie is the first of Pensak's players to be selected directly from the Lackawannna College roster.

Winnie, a freshman pitcher on this year's Region XIX championship team, is a graduate of Danville High School, Danville, Pennsylvania.  This past season, he posted a 7 win 1 loss record. His 64 strikeouts led the Falcon's Pitching Staff in that category, and ranked him second in Region XIX. Nationally, he ranked 10th in the NJCAA Division II statistical category of strikeouts per inning with an average of 1.16. Winnie was especially effective in the NJCAA Northeast District opener against Fredrick CC, when as the winning pitcher; he gave up only 5 hits over nine innings and struck out 11. His last 3 strikeouts came in the ninth inning, when he struck out the side.
